On the USS Fredrick C Davis, my uncle Willie Walter,Bill Thompson, was on the crows nest as the ship was hit, of course he was thrown off and never recovered. Thanks to one of his surviving shipmates we recieved a complete history of his death. Today, Nov. 5,2011, my grandson Jack Shaffman, Bill's great, great nephew is doing a 6th grade report on relative's in this war. This is right up Jack's ally since he has been a wwll die hard buff for several years. Thanks to all the shipmates that are keeping the memories alive. Catherine Thompson Kirk

My grandfather, William Glass, was also on board on that fateful April 24, 1945. I have started researching the DE136 and the crew only a few months ago.
I have some photos and some letters.
If anyone can help me gather more on the FC Davis I would appreciate it. I would be more than glad to share what I have.
I actually was surprised one day when Phillip Lundeberg (one of the 3 surviving officers) called me.

My. father, Joseph P. Fleming, was on the Frederick C. Davis the day it was hit. He told me many stories about that day. He talked about his fellow shipmates and how one of them held him up in the water while they waited for help. He talked about watching one of his shipmates floating over the wave into the horizon and thought how he couldn't swim but when he woke up that same individual was one of the first faces he saw. They were young, brave and frightened men, some of whom couldn't even swim. My dad felt guilty about surviving that day every day of the rest of his life. He kept his medals hidden in a drawer until my mom and I took them out and had them framed. My dad was the best human being I ever knew and I was unbelievably proud of him and every man on that ship that my dad helped me get to know through his stories. My dad died on June 1, 2004 and I keep his flag displayed in my living room. God bless all the men of the Frederick Davis, those alive and dead, survivors and lost. I still remember those stories and feel so proud!

To Pat Fleming - Thanks for sharing. Its hard to image that the 67th anniversary of the sinking is coming up soon.
Its good that you have the stories from your dad. Never Forget!
